The Greatest Foofa Cake Ever!

Totally awesome, and tastes delicious!

Today we are throwing a party to celebrate our oldest daughter’s birthday. In honour of said celebration, my wife has prepared the most glorious Foofa cake ever imagined, and certainly the most incredible one I’ve been able to find across the entire internet. Considering that this is the first birthday cake my wife has ever made and she did it from scratch, I gotta say that I am pretty freakin’ impressed.

For those of you who don’t recognize this festive pink character, she is part of the Yo Gabba Gabba crew, a TV show my daughter is obsessed with – obsessed with like I’m obsessed with The Simpsons. If you ask me, the likeness is uncanny – and I’m sure the red velvet cake lying beneath the fondant outer layer will be delicious.

Also totally awesome, and likely tastes like foam rubber.

  • Happy Birthday to your daughter!

And WOW to your wife. I can’t make a simple cake let alone one of that caliber. Absolutely insane. And on her first try! Kudos!

Yo Gabba Gabba is a mental show. It feels like a bad acid trip everytime it’s on but my youngest son used to watch it like crazy too.

That song “Don’t bite your friends” cracks me up every time.

    • I loved Mos Def as Super Mr. Superguy and Weird Al as the circus Ringmaster… in fact there’s many others that I loved. Those mormon punk rockers really know how to make a kid’s show.

Yeah, Anj has the rare gift of uncovering a new talent every year… me, I gotta milk the same ones I discovered in middle school…

OH! I love this cake!!! My 2 year old daughter LOVES foofa & I’d like to make this for her b-day. Can you please give me some tips or instructions on how your wife did this? Thank you very much. Marie

    • Thanks for writing in, Marie! I’ll put in a request with the Mrs. and see if she can off up some advice.

    • Hi Marie,

Thanks so much for the kind remarks… i had a great time making this cake and it tasted amazing!!!!
My suggestion is to make the icing and cake yourself and go buy some fondant that you can put food colouring in yourself. Fondant is really hard to make and unless you have one of those large Kitchen Aid mixers, you’re better off buying it. Also, you can find all the supplies you need at Michaels, they have a great selection of baking tools and the special tools needed to work with fondant.

I chose to make a red velvet cake and i picked any recipe online – suggestion, to make a stronger chocolate flavour, i put at least a cup more of unsweetened cocoa than the recipe asked for and three times as much of the red food colouring. For the icing, i chose something simple, cream cheese icing. I added at least double the recommended amt of confectioner’s sugar than what the recipe asked for to sweeten it up.

I drew out a huge Foofa, cut it out and once the cake cooled i placed it on top and traced the picture to get the proper shape and size. I also placed the cake on a cake board and covered it with waxing paper. I did this because it was easier to cut the cake and slide it off the board.

I iced it and let it stand overnight in the fridge.

The next morning, i rolled out the fondant and placed the desired amount of food colouring in it to make it the perfect pink. Remember to set aside some non coloured fondant for the flower around her collar, the flower on her head, the eyes etc. You’ll have to use other colours for that. To colour the fondant, place the food colouring a small dab at a time and fold it into the fondant. If your fingers/hands get sticky just use some shortening on your hands (rub it on like lotion) and the fondant won’t stick to your fingers. When you start rolling it out, make sure you use a fondant roller, works so much nicer. Also remember lay down some wax paper on your table before you start working with the fondant – the wax prevents it from sticking everywhere. You’ll definitely need a second pair of hands to place the fondant on the cake – you don’t want it to tear. once you get it onto of the cake, you just start molding the fondant to your cake and cutting off the excess. It’s sort of like a craft project – you’ll have lots of fun doing this. Once you complete Foofa’s Body, you can glue on the rest of the pieces, mouth, flowers, eyes etc, but placing a small amt of icing to the bottom end of the cutouts and placing them on the cake.

Some things you may want to buy:
      - icing spatula
      - non liquid food colouring for the fondant – generally when adding to the fondant you use a toothpick. (buy the multi-pack, mine had 12 different colours in it)
      - cake board
      - cake markers – i used the black one to outline her eyes and her arms
      - fondant roller
      - wax paper or parchment paper
      - shortening to keep your hands slick

I hope this helps. Good Luck and enjoy eating it. My friend told me that the most memorable birthday parties were the ones where her mom made her birthday cake for her… that was my inspiration to make this and I’m so happy that I did, her facial expression when she saw it was priceless and she was so in love with it.

Happy Birthday to your little girl and if you have any other questions, just post them here.
      Thanks,
      Angie – The Cynics Wife.
