Come on, Coen brothers, don’t let me down. After 3 films bogged down with meaninglessness, or perhaps set free from the tether of relevance, I’m hoping that Joel and Ethan have gotten it out of their system and are ready to offer something that has a message other than there being no message. Feast your eyes on the trailer for True Grit.
Not being much of a John Wayne fan, I haven’t actually seen the original (adding it to The List), so I’m not sure exactly what to expect, but can I make a confession and say I’ve always wanted to see Jeff Bridges playing a washed up, one-eyed cowboy? There, I said it.
True Grit’s release date has yet to be announced.
Update! Here’s the so-called “feature trailer”. Even more awesome!
The trailer looks good and making me much more likely to catch it in theater. It seems the little girl is the main character so it could impact who gets what in terms of end of year awards
And the Coens aren’t ones to bring on talent just because they’re “Fresh” or whatever, so there could be something great in store here.
“but can I make a confession and say I’ve always wanted to see Jeff Bridges playing a washed up, one-eyed cowboy? There, I said it.”
Amen to that.
If only we could see him as a vest-wearing astro-smuggler…
I haven’t seen the original either and gotta admit that the trailer actually left me a little unsatisfied. But you can see that the Coen’s hands are all over those shots so I’ll give it a chance.
Roger Deakins has never turned in footage that wasn’t spectacular. If we’ve got gunplay, revenge, eyepatch, Bridges, and desert scenery we’re all set. No Country was pretty Western, but just damn depressing and pointless – I’m ready for round two.
I think its all about THE SEARCHERS… this trailer does look great… as if we have been waiting all these years for the coens to make a true western.
Agreed, it’s about time considering they’re always making modern American classics. The Big Lebowski was a pretty good Western/Mystery hybrid – although the Western part was pretty much all handled by Sam Elliott.
I’m a huge fan of the John Wayne film. That being said, I’ve been waiting for this for a long while. I think the story of True Grit and the Coen Brothers will be a damn good combination!
Was the John Wayne film unmistakably a John Wayne vehicle? This interpretation looks like it plays on some other characters, especially the girl, a little more thoroughly. Could make for a very different film entirely.
