When all there is for dinner is American Catfish, you know you’re FUBAR

A fresh show for a fresh new year! We our latest journey round the sun rolling with reviews of Catfish, The American and modern Canadian classic FUBAR II. We also talk over our new years resolutions, discuss the merits of Easy A over Mean Girls and have just enough time to chat up our trailers and Vault picks.

  1. Brian and Steve chat about their New Years resolutions and discuss the merits of Easy A and how it might have surpassed Mean Girls in cleverness in many ways even if it might not have been as funny.
  2. After Steve is done whining about his devastating loss in the MILFcast’s Tournament of Champions, it’s time for a DVD review. FUBAR II might not seem like it on the surface, but from what Steve and Brian can tell it has all the hallmarks of a Canadian classic. That the DVD comes with a coaster shouldn’t be taken as some kind of omen of our reaction, but was it good enough to find a place on both of their shelves?
  3. Nevermind that Steve’s comparisons of The American to Spaghetti Westerns fell on deaf ears, there is still plenty of thoughtful consideration for Anton Corbijn hit man drama and drooling over it’s female lead, Violante Placido.
  4. Just about everything about the documentary Catfish has to remain a secret to preserve its impact, so to review might not be the best idea. Not good enough for the Film Cynics though, we dance around the edges as best we can and try to make a cogent argument to either check it out of avoid it entirely.
  5. For trailers this week Brian handles the comedy with Cedar Rapids and Steve handles the action with Hanna. Brian’s Vault pick of the week is the “feel bad” biopic American Splendor, and if you can figure out why Steve chose Starman for his Vault pick you could win a sweet prize.

  • Quite the post title – did you hurt yourself coming up with that one?
    (Can’t wait to listen btw)

    • I had second and third thoughts about that title – but really, it just blurted out of my neocortex and onto the computer screen. Hope you enjoy it, I believe you get a shout out in there somewhere.

  • WAH! haha
You did get robbed Steve but it was just bad strategy. We’ll give you another shot at it. And, Brian, you still have an invite to come on the show… if you have the balls! Muhuahuahua!!!
Question: I haven’t seen Catfish yet and am really excited for it. Can I listen to the whole show without having it ruined???

    • We keep the discussion spoiler free. Based on Brian mispronouncing Nev’s name, I’m not sure he’s actually seen the movie at all, so I’m probably the only that has any plot points to divulge and I keep it zipped…

Bad strategy and choking under pressure… plus confusing my decades. Out of Sight? What was I thinking?!

  • @ Kai… You’ll be happy to know that I declined Steve’s invitation to talk Tounament of Champions on air, since I knew you’d disapprove.

As for CATFISH, I’d say you’re best going in blind. Not like you’re gonna have a gigantic twist spoiled or anything, but I found for me it was best to avoid details and just “let it play”.
