Mad Hatters and Dragons and Box Sets. Oh my!

We’ve got a full house this week to talk about the 5 worst TV Dads with the help of the bad boy of the Toronto movie blogger scene, the Mad Hatter. He’s taking a break from the cavernous depths of the Dark of the Matinee to help us out with our critical duties on How to Train Your Dragon and the latest Martin Scorsese Collection.

  1. We get to know award winning movie blogger, Mad Hatter a little better by taking over his favourite directors and favourite movie.
  2. We have unanimous approval for How to Train Your Dragon, Dreamworks’ latest animated film on DVD.
  3. Yet another Martin Scorsese collection has made it to market, but none of seem terribly happy about the idea, no matter how much we like his work. It’s a complicated emotion.
  4. After a brief update on our ongoing Mad Men beef, we talk about the top 5 Worst TV Dads.
  5. To put a nice cherry on everything we break open the Vault for Apocalypse Now, Primer and Titus and share the trailers for 127 Hours, Paul and The Tempest.

  • I’m still surprised that I managed to get through all of that without cursing on the air. This was a blast boys – thanks for having me on and for the lively discussion.

    • It was a great show, for sure. Everything came naturally, which is when the show is at its best. We were a little rushed at the beginning – but it all came together. Especially liked bringing up the Mad Men beef, gave the show the personal touch. You’re welcome any time, Hatter!

I was kinda disappointed in the Blu-ray / DVD release. I love the movie and the video extras are great, but I was hoping for a gift set, like an inclusion of a stuffed toy (well, something comparable to how Ponyo was released). My main reason is that in a city like Victoria, movie merchandise comes and goes very fast, so they’re not easy to locate locally once when a movie is gone.

    • Yeah, the DVD 2 pack arrived unsolicited – which was cool. But to my knowledge that’s as gifty as the sets get. As I recall, the special gift sets for other Dreamworks movies didn’t start showing up until a little after release. Keep your eyes peeled in November – something might bubble to the surface. The movie shop at the corner of Broad and Johnson seems to stock a lot of memorabilia stuff, not to mention Cherry Bomb toys a couple stores down – they might be a good spot to dig around for movie related whathaveyous.

    Thanks for the tip, Steve.

The staff at Cherry Bomb are great, and I visit when I get a chance to. I haven’t seen anything HTTYD related there or at their toy show tho’. Maybe I missed noticing, but I’ll have to keep a sharper eye out for it now. I have far too many interests to keep up with, and that also includes looking for the more interesting pieces of Penguins of Madagascar merchandise.
