This week we prove that being the biggest grossing movie of all time is no guarantee of a good review from The Film Cynics. Steve and Brian devote their time to explaining why the Earth Day release of Avatar was the height of studio arrogance. Just sit back and hear the sparks fly. There’s also time for Brian to offer up his thoughs on The Losers and how it stacks up against Kick-Ass. We also geek out over handheld camcorders, run down a few television tidbits including Happy Town, break The Abyss and Midnight Run out of the Vault, and then cast a light on the trailers for Paper Man and Get Low.

Okay, I’ve watched Avatar five times this weekend, but I concede releasing it on Earth Day was just another strike for those that hate James Cameron to jump on the bandwagon of non-fans.
As a huge fan, I agree it was arrogant.
Do you think that James Cameron was in a position to do anything about this marketing blitz? He doesn’t seem to be the kind of low-rent director that would be powerless against the studios, but I guess the mountain of money that Fox stands to make in this deal is too much for them to hold back.
I think I might sit and watch Avatar again tonight with my headphones on and the sound way up… There’s no denying it’s a great time, just a lousy package.
I watched it five times last weekend. I’m not hating by any means. I’m definitely on team Cameron in spite of his agenda, because he serves it on such a pretty platter, I will eat it and pay top dollar for it.
I really have been meaning to give it another spin, but my TV time has really been at a premium since the new wee one arrived. I think there’s some kind of comfort to be found in knowing that Cameron’s tucked away on the disc somewhere, waiting to gush about all the work he’d done to get things looking just right. The feature just on its own is more of an orphan.
Hey, I dig the new homepage look guys, very nice! I like the movie, but if they think I’d fork over my hard-earned $$ for this bare dvd with no bonus features whatsoever then think again! I’ll probably wait until I have a 3d TV which by then they’d already released the 20th version of the dvd!!
Anyway, apparently even without my help it still makes over 6 million in 4 days, WOW!
Thanks Ruth! Yeah, we’ve shifted our podcast’s centre of gravity over to our blog. I’m agreeing with you 100%: Avatar was a very good movie, but as far as DVD’s and blurays go, it hails back to the days of the VHS. By the time I can get my hands on a 3D TV, all TV shows will be in 3D and I’ll be able to watch Avatar on Encore Avenue.
