The Super Bowl is all well and good as a showcase for the game, but I’m of the kind that watches it more for the commercials than for anything else. Beyond the entertainment value, there’s also plenty to be learned about the current state of society from the advertisements of that era, what products are being pushed, what techniques tend to be used to persuade, what passes for salacious or racy at the time… but nevermind all that, ’cause the only thing I wanted to see was the trailer for Joe Johnston’s Captain America. There are plenty of juicy bits to be gleaned from this new trailer, most especially is a poindextered Chris Evans through the magic of CG, a little bit of cheeky humour, and what looks to be a film entirely set in the 40s and not in the modern age, guess they’ll be saving that for the Avengers movie. No sign of Howard Stark, but I could spot “Dum-Dum” Dugan in there, and some great teases of Hugo Weaving as the Red Skull, adding to his already impressive list of iconic characters.
Captain America will be waving the flag in theatres on July 22, 2011.
Well I might be in the minority but I’m just ok with this one. I might end up seeing it as I like superhero movies, but my anticipation level is more on the low side. I do like Hugo Weaving and Richard Armitage so I guess I’m more interested in the villains than the hero, ahah. I think Evan’s pecs look too inflated they’re like man boobs. I find it too distracting… not in a good way.
Just having Chris Evans reduced to 98 pound weakling via CG is worth the price of admission for me. You’re right on the money, though: The real thespian talent lies with the villains, as it should. Some of the most memorable films that would have otherwise been throwaways, are ones where the opposite side is the one you’re invested in. Hey, Evans worked hard for those balloon pecs – if they were mine I’d be jiggling them in everyone’s face.
