We Go the Distance from Deadwood all the way to The Pacific

You’d think that after doing guest spots on the MILFcast and the LAMBcast on Saturday that Steve would be all talked out, but he’s been saving all his best stuff for the ‘Cynics. This week we’re playing catch up with reviews of Deadwood, The Pacific and Going the Distance. Plus Steve introduces a new segment called “What did I learn this week?” that brings to light musings on casting and feminist issues. We’ve even got American Teen and Band of Brothers from the Vault and the trailers for Ip Man 2 and And Everything is Going Fine.

  1. With the niceties of saying hello out of the way, Steve introduces a new segment called “What’d I learn this week?” This offers Brian a chance to marvel over casting similarities between different shows and Steve gets to vent about the lack of strong female role models in kids movies.
  2. It’s been a long time coming, but Deadwood is finally available on blu-ray and we in no uncertain terms think you should pick it up.
  3. Band of Brothers is one of the greatest miniseries of all time, so its follow up The Pacific must be great too, right? Well, not so much.
  4. Nanette Burstein has taken a break from cutting edge documentary filmmaking to do a romantic comedy, Going the Distance. Does she have the chops for this genre?
  5. From the Vault this week, we’ve got Band of Brothers and American Teen – and our trailers are And Everything is Going Fine and Ip Man 2.

  • You guys only had each other to talk to? Cripes, that must have sucked.

BTW – I wanted to ask: is 808 a lucky number or something? I find myself wondering why that’s the posting time for The Cynics.

    • Was great running into you on the LAMBcast BTW! Great to come across a familiar voice online.

The 808 thing is a congruence of things – it started with trying to find an ideal time for things to go up during the day from a timezone perspective. The earlier bit of the morning seemed to make the most sense. From there it was a simple matter of my boyhood love of Public Enemy: “To the brothers with the 808 / Like I said before PE got a brand new funk”, the 808 referring to a Roland drum machine. I’ve always like the ring of that line, still echoes in my head every time I schedule a blog post. When you think Film Cynics, what I want you to be thinking is Public Enemy.
