Play With Fire

When we started this Film Cynics project, one of the things I was hoping to accomplish was shedding light on films that might have been overlooked by the public at large. When it comes to Canadian cinema, we’ve got our work cut out for us because there’s so much great stuff that people either never see or never hear of, and that’s just the films that actually have a budget! What about the few, the proud, the independent filmmakers in this fine country who decide to go it alone and create something they can share with the world? Who’s gonna blow the fanfare for them?

On December 14th, just such a film is coming to the Cinecenta in Victoria, BC. It’s called Play With Fire, and it’s about the drug subculture in smalltown British Columbia. Writen and directed by Soren Johnstone, it’s a story about love, friendship and betrayal – and looks to be playing up all of the darker aspects of life surrounded by the urban decay of shut down paper mills and broken communities. Stay tuned for our review of Play With Fire in next week.
