Greenberg gets Tattooed, Dragon style

Has it been a while since you’ve heard two grown men eviscerate a harmless DVD? Then we’ve got the show for you! Greenberg is coming out on Tuesday and we’ve got a whole list of reasons why it’s only good enough to rest our beverages on. To keep it balanced though, we also review a near-perfect DVD: The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo. We also hold a tiny celebration for the 25th Anniversary of Back to the Future, and talk about the slow and perhaps inevitable demise of the video store. There’s time for that and a few more minutes for the trailers for The Social Network and The Girl Who Played With Fire.

  • I was so excited to see this because of Squid and the Whale, but Greenberg fell far short of my expectations. Just made me very uncomfortable and I wanted to like it. Just very hard being stuck in a theatre with a protagonist you wanna just smack in the face.

    • Yeah, there was nothing redeemable about any of these people – especially Stiller’s titular character. This kind of ironic “nobody to root for” storytelling barely works for the Coen brothers, and it totally doesn’t work for Baumbach.

  • Another stellar episode gentlemen! Loved hearing all the praise for DRAGON TATTOO, which I too regard as one of the best things we’ve seen this year.

Likewise all that BACK TO THE FUTURE talk took me back to being a kid and holding that up as one of my favorite films. Doesn’t it feel strange to be five years away from the point they jump to in BTTF 2? According to that film, we’re five years off from hoverboards, dehydrated pizzas, and flying cars!

(Can’t say I’m looking forward to paying $50 for a Pepsi though)

Case I’ve never mentioned it, you guys sure do make a workday go by a whole lot easier!

    • Thanks dude! Dragon Tattoo caught me in its talons – although the news is not quite as good when it comes to Played With Fire, but we’ll get to that this Sunday…

I totally regretted not being a little better prepared to talk about BTTF. It was nice to reminisce, but I wanted to talk out how the heck Marty and Doc Brown know each other. I think I need to see a BTTF prequel – maybe where Marty’s daughter or Doc’s kids Jules and Verne travel back to before Marty meets Doc… And yes, still a strange cross to bear for my BTTF 2 not being able to play properly…

Hatter, we love having you listen in. And if it keeps you from the depth of employment ennui, then all the better.

  • Just saw The Girl with a Dragon Tattoo, definitely one of the best crime/mystery movie in quite some time. A bit up there in terms of how explicit it is in a couple scenes (well for US audiences) but great movie!

    • Is it wrong for me to admit that it was this explicitness that puts this movie so high on my list? The brutality is what let me know that this film wasn’t messing around. Such wonderfully crafted characters too – I wanna say that Lisbeth reminds me of this or that, but she’s so totally her own thing.

  • [...] stupid and a waste of time. I’m paraphrasing here. You could hear their verbal tongue lashing here. Personally, I am not familiar with the works of Baumbach. Going into this movie, I heard nothing [...]
