Wow. This ages me. It is kind of cool to see where these actors have turned up. It has been so long since I’ve seen it that I honestly didn’t remember. I forgot Short Round was in it. No time for love Dr. Jones!!!!!!!!
Same feeling can be said for Stand By Me as well. Fun movie. I’m going to have to watch it and let my kids see it. Ahh, and now you mention Jerry O’Connell just as I’m typing this. ha!
And they often have it at Target on $5 bin!
There was a great article in Empire Magazine about a year or so ago about how the cast of The Goonies have been doing, it complemented the “visual commentary” of the DVD nicely. It was actually interesting in the commentary that Josh Brolin actually showed up to take part, but it was pre-comeback Josh Brolin – a little more humble that you would have expected from big brother Branden.
Alas, things haven’t turned out quite as well for the boys from Stand By Me. One death, one career suicide via Star Trek, one handsome but peripherally employed, and one Corey Feldman. I remember seeing that movie in grade 8 with my buddies – I think we had to get a stranger to buy our tickets cause it was rated 14A. Does the kind of music that tough guys listened to in the 50s strike anyone as strange?
I did some googling and there is a 25th anniversary bluray coming out in November. It looks good. This set is obviously made by fans for fans, with a ton of memorabilia included (board game, prints, souvenir magazine, reprint of that 2009 article). I’m willing to bet it’s going to be packed in a box, like the Dungeons & Dragons cartoon DVD set.
What I love from this movie is that I’ll stop what I’m doing and watch it whenever it’s on TV. I absolutely did nothing productive that day when I stumbled on the AMC celebration. But you two nailed that generation in the head perfectly about mention of Astoria. That place was a scheduled stop during my road trip many years back. I wasn’t even reminded of the movie until the memories started kicking in. My friend and I went to Cannon Beach too, and I felt tiny when standing next to Haystack Rock.
But I must say, in town and near the Astoria–Megler Bridge, there’s a river side seafood eatery (Ship Inn British Pub & Restaurant) that I loved. People are paying more for the view than the food, but it was fairly decent too.
Ed! Research like that is always welcome here. I guess late is better than never – I’m just disappointed I haven’t been bombarded by any hype about it from the folks over at Warner. I don’t know if I would have compared it to the Dungeons & Dragons DVD set… but I suppose the character setup and the time periods are pretty much the same so touché.
Love that you managed to include a food review in a movie blog comment box. I think that’s a first for this site – I hope it won’t be the last.
