Midnight Run (1985)

midnight_run1There have been some rumors and speculation between various parties on the internet that there will be a sequel made to “Midnight Run”. As a fan of the original I am both happy and sad about these developments. Happy because it was such a good movie and De Niro and Grodin were so good together that I would be hard pressed to state that I wouldn’t want to see them together again. Sad because 25 years later, I don’t think that they can out do what they did originally and the new movie is going to feel like a complete waste of time and a cash grab.

“Midnight Run”was such a fun mix of action and comedy that it shouldn’t be touched again. De Niro was perfect as the bounty hunter escorting Charles Grodins neurotic mob accountant across the country. They worked great together. If you haven’t seen this movie I highly recommend that you check it out. Its just a good fun time, and sometimes, that is all you need.

  • Convince me it’s more interesting than Riggs and Murtaugh babysitting Leo Getz.

  • Yep, I wish I could be convinced a sequel was a good idea. The original is just such an entertaining film – strangely enough it’s one of those “always on at Christmas even though it isn’t about Christmas” movies over here (like The Good, The Bad & The Ugly and Indiana Jones).

  • Still haven’t seen this…for shame, me, for shame.

    • Bah! I haven’t seen it either… nor have I seen Midnight Express… I have seen Midnight Cowboy though… Charles Grodin has never been a real draw to a film for me, ever – and knowing that DeNiro has wound up in some unwatchable places before has never left me feeling like Midnight Run needs to be added to my “I have seen” list.

I can only say dont judge this movie until you have seen it. It is quite enjoyable and a good time. Maybe it should be your first midnight movie Steve.
