Besides our obligation to talk about the Oscars at least a little bit, we manage cough up two DVD reviews this week: Michael Moore’s Capitalism: A Love Story and Spike Jonze’s Where the Wild Things Are – with Brian feeling comfortable having both titles in his collection and Steve… well, not so much. Steve also tells Brian all about St. John’s Newfoundland sleuth family dramedy Republic of Doyle (with a detour about the state of his cable service) which leaves us just a sliver of time to break two very special titles out of the Vault, Joy Division biopic Control and underground documentary (literally) Dark Days.

A Serious Man takes a Couple’s Retreat where he falls in love with The Time Traveller’s Wife

Despite our listenership dwindling to almost nil for the Super Bowl (why didn’t anybody tell me about this thing?) we had a jam packed show after Steve over-ordered movies to review. So besides our opening commentary about the Oscar nominations, we have reviews for the Coen Brothers’ semi-autobiographical A Serious Man, Vince Vaughn and Jon Favreau’s “passion” project Couples Retreat and Eric Bana’s temporally challenged romantic adaptation The Time Traveller’s Wife. You won’t believe which one we liked best until you hear it, and even then you might not believe it. We round out the show with our Picks from the Vault, One Week and The Last Boy Scout and then trailer suggestions for The Losers and Cemetery Junction.
