Welcome to the podcast for the modern movie watcher. The Film Cynics were once a pair of surly video store clerks that eventually worked their way into the biz. After bouncing around in the industry for a while, they decided to stay true to the adage of: Those who can’t do, teach. And those who can’t find teaching jobs, create websites so they can spout off about movies and TV and anything in pop culture that catches their short attention spans. In our podcast you’ll be able to tune into our radio show on CFAX 1070.

I had the pleasure of being invited to join Dave Dickson on the radio on Friday to talk about the impending farce known as the Golden Globe Awards. This is also a rare occasion where I don’t come away from a guest appearance feeling that I’ve crammed my foot into my mouth. By the time the hour’s up, we’ve laughed a little, learned a few things, and hopefully offended the entire Hollywood Foreign Press Association.

This week we're reviewing the rare dual Friday releases of The Town and Legend of the Guardians.

We’ve got plenty to talk about as usual this week, but we get through it so well you can barely tell Brian’s joining us via telephone. We’ve got reviews for The Town & Legend of the Guardians, as well as our thoughts on the Golden Globe nominations, and we’ve even got our holiday spirit chugging as we break A Christmas Story and Bad Santa out of the Vault.

The Golden Globes nominations have been posted and Brian and Steve have a few things to get off their chests about it, one them includes vomiting noises (we’re a classy bunch around here). We also discuss a little about the AFI’s top 10 of 2010, and how they might have a more accurate read on the pulse of the filmmaking industry.

A little change of pace this week to ring in the season, we break open the Christmas Vault with Steve & Brian’s favourite Christmas movies – and what would Christmas be without a little argument about them?

Ben Affleck’s second love letter to Boston, The Town, is out on blu-ray just in time for the Christmas rush. It’s a film with a lot of familiar elements in it, but is this AFI top 10 movie an imitator or just paying homage?

In between superhero films, Zack Snyder decided the next logical film to work on was one about owls engaging in mortal combat… What? There seem to be several elements at odds with eachother in this film, can they find a balance and take flight?

From what has been an agonizing trickle the last few weeks, so a sudden deluge of great trailers, we discuss the trailers for Summer Wars, The Tree of Life, Water for Elephants, Limitless & Take Me Home Tonight.

We open up this week’s show with an interview with Donovan Aikman from the Victoria Film Festival, asking him about how the Festival will bring film to life in Victoria. We follow that up with a brief discussion on our picks for the Golden Globes (you’ll notice Steve was on the money). Our DVD review of the week is Christian Alvert’s sci-fi thriller Pandorum, starring Ben Foster and Dennis Quaid, and we were both very impressed. There was a bit of a trailer drought this week, but we’ve maintained the balance from last week, by offering up 4 Vault picks: Alien 3, Event Horizon, The Jerk and The Office.

This week we guide you through picking out a new TV, and review District 9 and (500) Days of Summer.

We had a humungous show this week with so much coming out and so much going on leading up to Christmas, so we did things a little different. We begin with a quick discussion about some of the Golden Globe nominations, we big hearted Brian essentially wishing all the nominated comedy shows could win. We then jump into Geeking Out early with special guest Mark Planiden who shares his adventures in trying to upgrade his TV to High Definition. Was he satisfied with what he found out there? We tackled two reviews in this busy week, with our impressions on District 9 and (500) Days of Summer – one of them gets our highest rating ever, can you guess which one? Finally we drool over the latest trailer for Iron Man 2, then break out three Christmas titles out of the Vault: Scrooged, Elf and The Long Kiss Goodnight.
