Welcome to the podcast for the modern movie watcher. The Film Cynics were once a pair of surly video store clerks that eventually worked their way into the biz. After bouncing around in the industry for a while, they decided to stay true to the adage of: Those who can’t do, teach. And those who can’t find teaching jobs, create websites so they can spout off about movies and TV and anything in pop culture that catches their short attention spans. In our podcast you’ll be able to tune into our radio show on CFAX 1070.

This week, we review Capitalism: A Love Story and Where the Wild Things Are and get strong opinions on both sides.

Besides our obligation to talk about the Oscars at least a little bit, we manage cough up two DVD reviews this week: Michael Moore’s Capitalism: A Love Story and Spike Jonze’s Where the Wild Things Are – with Brian feeling comfortable having both titles in his collection and Steve… well, not so much. Steve also tells Brian all about St. John’s Newfoundland sleuth family dramedy Republic of Doyle (with a detour about the state of his cable service) which leaves us just a sliver of time to break two very special titles out of the Vault, Joy Division biopic Control and underground documentary (literally) Dark Days.

With no fresh DVD's to talk about we review Shutter Island and talk about the Winter Olympics.

We did things a little different this week and start off the show chatting about the Winter Olympics. Hey, it’s a pop-culture event that’s televised, so it’s kind of under our purview. We also break down Brian’s picks for Joss Whedon’s best projects (for some reason, we don’t talk about Alien Resurrection) in honour of the cancellation of Dollhouse. With no fresh DVD’s delivered to our door this week, we checked out opening weekend of Shutter Island and man did we like it, even if it seemed to go over some people’s heads. We actually Geek Out this week and discuss the merits of the upcoming iPad, then break out Taxi Driver and Goodfellas from our Scorcese Vault and shed light on the trailers for Centurion and Defendor.

We hope you enjoy our list of our favourite 10 movies of the past decade.

We’ve got something a little different this week. Instead of our usual format we’re running down our 10 favourite films of the past decade – Steve’s 5 and Brian’s 5. We might have been a little short on some of the facts, and Brian might lose count a couple times, but there’s some great films in here, and some great ways to critique proof your collection. You might notice that this show sounds a little different than the others – that’s because it was pretaped so we could take a little vacation this week.

With it’s impressive array of talent, Couples Retreat’s failure to deliver laughs took us completely off guard. For a movie written by a talented team of married guys, who knew they knew so little about what was funny about being married?
